INVITATION FOR BIDS TO PROVIDE SHORT TERM CONSULTANCY SERVICES TO PROMOTE CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE IN COMMUNITY DESIGNATED FARMING AREAS IN BUHINGU AND IGALULA WARDS, UVINZA DISTRICT

1.0    Background

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Pathfinder International (Pl) in Tanzania are jointly implementing an integrated Program known as Tuungane which addresses Population, Health and Environment (PHE). Agriculture which forms the main livelihood activity on the terrestrial environment has been blamed for the increasing siltation of Lake Tanganyika through unsustainable farming practices. To reduce siltation which has adverse effect to the lake fisheries productivity, Tuungane program aim sat supporting smallholder farmers in the Greater Mahale Ecosystem(GME) in improving their agricultural practices through adoption of Conservation Smart Agriculture(CSA). For better results, the program aims at promoting Conservation Smart Agriculture in large community designated farming areas in 7 villages instead of isolated individual farms. The target 7 villages include Katumbi. Nkonkwa, Buhingu,Mgambo (Buhingu ward),lgalula, Rukoma and Mgambazi(lgalula ward).promoting Conservation Smart Agriculture in7 villages using community designated farmingareas.

Currently, Tuungane program is seeking short term consultancy services from facilitator(s) with skills and experience to promote the adoption of conservation agriculture in community designated farming areas in the two wards of Buhingu and lgalula.

2.      Consultancy Services

The following is the list of needed consultancy services:

2.1    Conduct meetings with community leaders and farmers in7villages to sensitize them on the importance of adopting Conservation Smart Agriculture for reducing lake sedimentation, improving soil health and crop yields. Hold internal meetings with members of the village Governments and Community Agriculture Workers first, then hold public meetings with community members in each village. The community leaders should well understand the reasons why Conservation Agriculture is important and be able to lead their people into actions.

2.2    Facilitate village Governments in the process of establishing bylaws to encourage the adoption of Conservation Agriculture by all community members.

2.3    Provide practical training and supervise community members in implementing conservation agriculture in their designated farming areas. As consultant, you should share your Knowledge on the subject manner in practical terms 10 give positive tangible results.

2.4    Establish one demonstration plot of Conservation Agriculture in each village where community members will learn and adopt the technologies involved in the control of soil erosion and improving soil health.

2.5    Provide extension services in 7 villages on oest conservation agricultural practices for 4 months. During this period, the consultant should introduce community members to agriculture professional groups where they can enhance their knowledge through WhatsApp and phone calls.

2.6    Establish one community Conservation Agriculture designated area per village. In this area, annual field crops (maize,bean) and perennial crops(banana,cassava) will be planted.

2.7    Ensure the active participation into this activity of members of Buhingu Ward Farmers Federation(AMCDS)an d Beach Management Units (BMUs).

2.8    Monitor for months the proper implement at ion of Conservation Agriculture in community designated farming areas as per knowledge shared during the practical trainingat demonstration plots.

2.9    Prepare and submit to TNC/ Tuungane program management monthly and final assignment progress reports.

3.0 Eligibility Criteria

Eligible consulting company or organization should possess the following minimum qualifications: Staffs with Minimum of Bachelor of Science in agriculture.

Have an experience of at least 3 years in training farmers on conservation/Ecology agriculture (attach list of completed similar assignments and CV of key personnel).

4.0 Application procedures

Interested organizations or companies with technical skills and appropriate experiences on the above-mentioned assignment, are warmly welcome to submit their electronic Technical Proposals (detailing the proposed conservation agricultural practices to be

implemented and the assignment implementation methodologies). The bidder should also submit a well itemized Financial Budget in TZS, organization/company financial capacity and activity time schedule on or before 28th October 2022 by email to: [email protected].
