Relationship Manager; Special Lending (1 Position(s))

Job Purpose:
To drive sustainable growth, profitability and portfolio quality of the Banks Special Lending portfolio, with primary responsibility for Pensioners Loans, Salary Advance and secured personal lending solutions including cash-covered, bond/investment-backed and other approved secured facilities

Main Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute portfolio and sales plans for Pensioners Loans, Salary Advance and secured personal lending products.
  • Drive acquisition, activation, utilization and retention across the Special Lending portfolio.
  • Own the Pensioners portfolio growth agenda by identifying acquisition and retention opportunities and building strong working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Drive pensioner customer acquisition before and after retirement by supporting structured conversion of eligible customers into pension banking relationships and ensuring continuity of their banking relationship with NMB.
  • Drive Salary Advance performance by increasing eligible-customer awareness, activation and utilization.
  • Grow secured personal lending, including cash-covered and bond/investment-backed facilities.
  • Provide end-to-end support on high-value or complex secured lending opportunities, coordinating with Credit, Operations, Treasury/Investment, Legal and other relevant functions.
  • Develop and maintain a structured pipeline for all Special Lending products.
  • Monitor branch, zone and overall Special Lending performance.
  • Prepare accurate periodic reports and forecasts on portfolio performance, pipeline, disbursements, revenue, utilization, asset quality and key initiatives, and escalate material issues.
  • Ensure adherence to lending policies.
  • Work with Product, Digital, Credit, Operations, Risk, Marketing and other stakeholders to improve Special Lending propositions and remove process bottlenecks
  • Gather and analyze customer feedback, competitor activity, market trends and portfolio behavior to recommend improvements
  • Conduct customer visits, pensioner engagements, product presentations, financial literacy sessions and targeted campaigns to generate leads, improve product understanding and deepen customer relationships
  • Support the branch network through joint customer visits, sales clinics, campaigns, product training, coaching and clear sales playbooks to strengthen capability and execution of Special Lending products
  • Monitor portfolio quality, arrears, early-warning indicators and product-specific risks, and coordinate timely remedial actions with branches and relevant control functions to protect asset quality.
Knowledge and Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of retail/consumer lending, credit assessment, portfolio management and lending risk controls.
  • Sound understanding of pensioner lending and the pension ecosystem, including customer acquisition, repayment arrangements and key stakeholder relationships.
  • Sound knowledge of secured personal lending, including cash-covered and bond/investment-backed facilities, collateral/security requirements and related operational processes.
  • Good understanding of Salary Advance and digitally enabled short-term lending propositions, including customer eligibility, utilization and portfolio monitoring.
  • Good knowledge of banking products and services, policies, procedures, KYC/AML requirements and branch operations.
  • Ability to interpret portfolio data, customer behaviour and market trends and translate insights into commercial actions.
  • Knowledge of business development, stakeholder engagement, relationship management and customer-experience principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Strong business development, sales, negotiation and relationship-management skills.
  • Strong credit, analytical and portfolio-management skills, with sound judgement and attention to risk.
  • Ability to originate and manage high-value or complex secured lending opportunities and coordinate multiple stakeholders through to disbursement.
  • Ability to coach, train and influence branch teams to achieve business objectives without direct reporting lines.
  • Excellent stakeholder-management, networking and partnership-development skills.
  • Excellent communication in English and Kiswahili, presentation, report-writing and numerical skills.
  • Strong planning, execution, problem-solving and time-management skills.
  • Customer-centric mindset with ability to simplify complex lending information and deliver practical solution
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelors degree in Banking, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration or another relevant business-related field.
  • Professional or postgraduate qualification in banking, credit, finance or related discipline is an added advantage.
  • At least 4 years relevant experience in retail/consumer lending, sales, relationship management or loan portfolio management.
  • Demonstrated track record in customer acquisition, lending growth and portfolio-quality management.
  • Experience in pensioner lending and/or secured personal lending, including cash-covered or bond/investment-backed facilities, is strongly preferred.
  • Exposure to digital lending or Salary Advance propositions and branch-network sales execution is an added advantage.
