The Barrick Africa Middle East Team is seeking to recruit a Mechanical Fitter to join and grow its team.

Responsibilities

The Mechanical Fitter will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and Barrick health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Report all Health, Safety, and Environmental issues through an incident report.
  • Conduct daily maintenance inspection and execution of plant equipment.
  • Ensure work completion details are finalized according to work requirements and procedures.
  • Ensure mechanical tools and equipment are maintained and stored according to Barrick and OEM safety standards and procedures.
  • Troubleshoot process plant equipment problems and solve engineering issues.
  • Ensure parts and components are selected and replaced as required according to specifications and the work plan.
  • Determine, obtain, and inspect the correct size, type, and quantity of materials or components for compliance with job specifications.
  • Plan work in detail, including sequencing and prioritizing, while considering maintenance of plant security and capacity according to system and site requirements.
  • Conduct weekly reviews of planned versus actual work compared to weekly and monthly plans in respective areas or sections.
  • Ensure handovers are conducted 100% accurately every day.
  • Maintain 100% compliance in completing required logbooks for daily, weekly, and monthly inspections.
  • Demonstrate competence in the use and operation of all required power tools and hand tools, ensuring they are inspected and maintained daily.
  • Respond to breakdowns according to priority and attend to them as soon as practically possible.
  • Ensure 100% compliance with equipment preventive maintenance schedules and carry out work accordingly every day.
  • Ensure 100% compliance with Standard Operating Procedures for safe work daily, including isolation, lockout, confined space, working at height, lifting, and rigging.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants must have the following qualifications:

  • A relevant trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a Technician Certificate from a recognized institution.
  • Technical or vocational school training, apprenticeship training, or on-the-job training such as FTC, VETA, IMTT Trade Test, or equivalent.
  • A Mechanical Trade Certification is highly desired.

Experience and Competencies Needed

Applicants should have the following experience, skills, and competencies:

  • At least 3 years of post-trade test experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ artisan experience in mechanical fitting, specifically working with gold plant equipment.
  • Demonstrated competence in the rebuilding and servicing of gold plant equipment.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to conduct hazard identification and risk assessment.
  • Ability to understand technical drawings and manuals.
  • Possession of a valid light vehicle manual-class driving license.
  • Strong technical and strategic planning experience and background.
  • Ability to consistently manage a diversified portfolio in a high-pressure environment.
  • Highly professional conduct at all times.
  • Ability to deal with a diverse client base.
  • Significant base knowledge of all areas covered in the job profile.
  • Motivation and ability to operate with minimum supervision.

About the Team

The North Mara gold mine is located in north-west Tanzania, in the Tarime district of the Mara Region. It is approximately 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border.

North Mara started commercial production in 2002. The mine is a combined open-pit and underground operation from two deposits:

  • Gokona, which is an underground deposit.
  • Nyabirama, which is an open-pit deposit.

The process plant has the capacity to process an average of 8,000 tonnes of ore per day.
