The Barrick Africa Middle East Team is seeking to recruit Hydrogeological Technician to join and grow our team.

Responsibilities 

  • Advise, scope, supervise and review groundwater related projects and reports as required.
  • To assist hydrogeology team in timely hydrogeology field data collection and monitoring including groundwater level data, hydro census data from surrounding springs, rivers, and boreholes. Measuring groundwater inflow rates in pits and underground, rivers, and boreholes as required.
  • Proactively advise on dewatering risks, techniques, and requirements.
  • Develop, advise and update dewatering management plans.
  • Supervision of dewatering, piezometer drilling and installation.
  • Logging of boreholes (diamond drilling, RC, RAB, Mud rotary, etc.)
  • Sampling (borehole, trench, pit, geochemistry, etc.)
  • Develop conceptual groundwater and numeric models as required.
  • Maintain and management of the site-based water balance model and provide monthly predictions as required.
  • Manage key hydrological related studies such as pit lake modelling. 
  • Support Underground (UG) and other department on dewatering strategies
  • Develop, keep up date and implement water monitoring program across the site.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual Water and Environmental Monitoring Reports 
  • Carry on inspections UG and open pits geological structures responsible for water ingress and advise best mitigation method/s 
  • Develop and implement participatory water monitoring/ joint water assessment plan

 Qualification requirements

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in hydrogeology, geology, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of hydrogeological principles and practices, such as groundwater flow, aquifer properties, well design, and water chemistry.  
  • Experienced in hydrology, hydromorphology, water quality and / or hydroecology and a strong understanding of aquatic systems, fieldwork (including drilling, sampling, and geophysical surveys).
  • Proficient in data analysis and hydrological modeling software, such as GIS, MODFLOW, and groundwater models.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability for technical report writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Critical thinking
  • Be physically and mentally fit, hardworking and ability to work well under pressure
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills in English Language.
  • Professional registration with NEMC as Environmental Expert (EIA and Auditing) is an added advantage.
  • Professional Scientific Registration.
  • Driving Competency with a valid Tanzania driving license.

Experience and competencies needed.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a hydrogeological Technician, preferably in the mining industry.
  • Should have good knowledge in water well or borehole drilling and yield measurement techniques
  • Monitoring data collection, data entry onto appropriate computer software programs, and data interpretation.
  • Understanding of the ISO 14001 certified environmental management system

About the Team

The North Mara gold mine is located in north-west Tanzania in the Tarime district of the Mara region. It is around 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border.

North Mara started commercial production in 2002. The mine is a combined open pit and underground operation from two deposits, Gokona (underground) and Nyabirama (open pit). The process plant has the capacity to process an average of 8,000 tonnes of ore per day.
